MANY graduates believe working as a government spy offers the best career opportunities.

But fewer are persuaded by the benefits of the army or navy as the conflict in Iraq drags on, the annual UK Top 100 Graduate Employers survey found.

For the first time since 1998, the army dropped out of the top ten, which researchers blamed on the conflict in Iraq. The Ministry of Defence has also fallen 47 places in the last two years to 83rd in the list.

But the government’s Cheltenham-based listening post, GCHQ, is a new entry at 89th place in this year’s table.

The research, which involved questioning more than 16,000 graduates who left UK universities this summer, found that leading accountancy firms were still topping the list.

For the second year running, PricewaterhouseCoopers took first place, ahead of the Civil Service and consultants Accenture. The BBC moved up one place from sixth in 2004 and the NHS dropped two places to seventh.

Martin Birchall, from High Fliers Research, who directed the survey, said it was "no surprise" that leading accountancy firms dominated the table of employers.
